09.30 – 10.00 – Feel the Force | President Frances Bronet | Higgins Auditorium

Frances Bronet, Professor of Architecture, President of Pratt Institute, will discuss how physical and architectural bodies impact each other and create “space-in-the-making” through a set of projects looking at two frameworks for designing for disability. One takes the body as a vehicle for enhancement, the other begins with any body’s abilities and designs an environment making that body fluid in it. President Bronet will review her performance installations and career as interlocking models for working together, ending with how the structures in the “Don’t Leave Me” mixed-abilities dance piece are only stable if the dancers manage where their bodies and shifting weight are placed. Her work describes how our collective musculatures are part of every architecture. If we cannot feel the force that we exert on each other through the vehicle of an unstable structure, then there will be failure.

10.00 – 11.00 – Border Crossings: Sustainable Social Action and the Risk of Relationship |  Lynn Kapitan | Higgins Auditorium

How is social action sustained when communities take up art therapy research to push against accepted narratives and risk real social transformation? Whether welcomed or not, they challenge us to grapple with certain ethical, relational, and moral lessons that arrive with the risk of relationship. Tracing the influence of her mentor Dr. Art Robbins on her evolving cross-cultural practice, Lynn Kapitan will describe how the borderlands transform us, sometimes in unforeseen directions.
